Why not use something like the Rainbow Ikey that uses a USB connection
which virtually every computer has nowdays?

The Ikey and others like it (not the pure storage types), are SmartCards.

I have talked to Rainbow about development on other platforms than Windows
and the response was that the company that they get the reader from will not
release their hardware specifications.

So, the Rainbow IKey is a SmartCard from Rainbow plus a USB SmartCard
reader from some other vendor, all put together in a nice little package by
Rainbow.

So, it is just like sending SmartCards + Readers to everyone. You just need the
proprietary drivers loaded on the system you are going to use.
