oh, I think he already told it:

I think this is the typical error that people assume they could use
shell variables in snort.conf.

Two days ago this subject was already discussed, I think.

You should use an #include statement and include a file defining the 
HOME_NET variable. This has to be created before starting snort and
with the real IP address (no ppp0_... variable).

Take simply a look at:

Of course, you have to replace eth0 by ppp0...
