I have seen this occur with the rpm distributions because they are coded
to look for specific libraries in specific locations. My suggestion would
be to build from source so you can control the installation more
effectively.

  One thing that gets me is that both tcpdump and ethereal work, which

  saying I'm missing libpcap.so.0.6.2, but I have libpcap.so.0.8.3.
