The "Snort for Dummies" is a good book to start with.  After, you read that,
you may wish to read "Snort 2.1" by Syngress.
Read first, then sit down and implement.  Don't try to shortcut, you will
gain much more if you walk before you run.

There are also tons of resources at http://www.snort.org  - Read the docs
section.  There you will find good papers on not only Snort, but also using
BASE, MySQL, etc..
