[Snort-sigs] lots of hits on ssh preprocessor

Subject: [Snort-sigs] lots of hits on ssh preprocessor
Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 11:35:10 +1200
130.216.34.38 wintermute01.cs.auckland.ac.nz ssh: Payload size incorrect for the given payload 7590
202.50.176.65 dahkness.204.net.nz ssh: Payload size incorrect for the given payload 2313

These two machines are generating lots of alters from the ssh preprocessor (counts at right).  They are two ends of the same session.

ssh versions look kosher:

bluebottle:~ rful011$ nc  130.216.34.38 22
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.3p2 Debian-8ubuntu1
^C punt!
bluebottle:~ rful011$ nc   202.50.176.65 22
SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.3p2 Debian-9
^C punt!

Any ideas why these two machines are generations so many alerts?

A bit more checking revealed that
130.216.34.38 wintermute01.cs.auckland.ac.nz was talking ssh to another host and was generating the same alerts so it looks as if it is the problem.

Russell
