So this begs the question... What functionality does Snort provide for
timing individual rules or rule files to assist in locating slow rules?

OK, so then it's anchored by ^ or \r\n then, with a \s afterwards.

But that's in the pcre match. It still doesn't help speeding up the
content match to get an early-out.

Then again, there are probably worse rules that suck more processing
time than this one :)
