| Subject: | [Snort-sigs] A newb question on Snort Rules |

Greetings all,
First off, if you don't care for ignorant questions about snort
rules please press DELETE now. ;)
Now then, I'm VERY new to Snort but have read through the
documentation and either I completely missed something or the
deceptively simple rule "language" isn't so simple for me. I can't
seem to find a way to create a rule that will look for a logical
negative. Basically I want to say "alert on any ICMP packet that
*doesn't* have this content" where the content is the Microsoft or
Linux ICMP type 0 implementation flavor. I've looked through just
about every ICMP related rule and they all seem to look for either
particular content in the DATA, some strange values in CODE or TYPE,
or the Ping-O-Death signature. If a logical negative could be checked
for it would eliminate the need for the other "particular content"
types of rules. Okay, it wouldn't, but I think it would still be
useful. ;)
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
