You receive 30? I receive close to 3 thousand. Seriously; at first glance I like the idea of a contributor/author tag for signatures. However; after talking with the non-signature-writers that still help me write signatures, and thinking about it, I have to cast a 'nay' vote. First; most signatures I know of come from a collaboration - like this community working together to detect something they feel worth detecting. Second; I think that 'tagging' a signature certainly gives credit; but when you're in a 24/7 shop managing sensors and want to get a certain detect in, to beat the punch and keep your response time up for your customer, do you really care? Third, your reputation speaks for itself when you provide signatures to the community. Generally; those that care and support this effort know who you are without having to see your name attached to a particular signature. And sometimes; people in different parts of the world come up with the same signature, and certainly often improve upon 'draft' signatures concerned people provide. We don't need 20+ 'authors' on signatures in our rulesets. Finally, on this same note; I would like to think that those that create signatures do so in the spirit of getting the job done and helping everyone - not for any personal recognition. These are my takes on the topic. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: Sybase ASE Linux Express Edition - download now for FREE LinuxWorld Reader's Choice Award Winner for best database on Linux. http://ads.osdn.com/?ad_idU88&alloc_id065&opÌk _______________________________________________ Snort-sigs mailing list Snort-sigs@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/snort-sigs
