 Brad,
You are lucky to live in one of the most pandemic-aware cities
in the US (Unless you've moved for your new job). Seattle has taken this
very seriously. See:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5128474

We (DHL) have been looking at this extremely hard because of the
implications outside of our direct workplace. Impact issues on
industries or agencies that affect our employees (and DHL indirectly)
are:

- Trucking industry (how will food get to the stores)
- School closures (two income families may have to result to one to
watch the kids)
        - Now who does the job of that person who is no longer working?
- Police (increased unlawful activity such as looting, home invasions,
robberies, etc)
- Fire Department (emergency response)
- Gasoline shortages (hopefully you have a strong VPN solution)
- Telephone, power, gas, or cable companies (service restoration will be
slow or non-existent). Now about that VPN solution.......
- Hospital bed shortages
- Doctors and Nurses
- Water treatment plants
- Air Travel reduced significantly

Take a day and look at every service you use from your electric clock to
your drive/ride to work, and back home. This will need to be taken in to
account in your BCP. If this becomes a true pandemic to the level of the
1918 flu, every service we use will be negatively affected in some way.
Also look at having non-mission-critical personnel (such as HR, IT
managers, etc.) shadow and learn the jobs of mission-critical personnel
in case they are impacted and need to have a back-up.

I am not a BCP specialist at all. I'm more of a survivalist. But the
services mentioned above are just a few that we have discussed here that
I can think of right now. The NPR story link above has the live story on
a "listen" link which has more details. They get pretty graphic on how
it will impact individuals as well. This impact, in turn, will impact
your organization. Lucky for you, you don't have to look far in your
city to find individuals who are taking this extremely seriously. Good
luck my friend.

Subject: BCP for Avian Flu Pandemic

A little off the main topic, but still relevant to information security
management from a BCP perspective.

I am looking for points of contact to touch base with on emergency
management planning for the potential avian flu pandemic (or any large
infectious disease outbreak). We have come across a requirement in New
York to demonstrate the presence of a contingency plan...

Anyone else addressing this same issue?

Thanks,
Brad Bemis
