Data scoring and fine-tuning of back-up policy

Subject: Data scoring and fine-tuning of back-up policy
Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 10:55:08 +0100
Hi list,

I am starting a project to fine-tune our back-up strategy in order to
decrease tape storage costs and to optimise our back-up infrastructure.
Currently we experience volume constraints to perform full back-ups in a
given time frame and with our current infrastructure. The data
classification we apply to our data is 'rough' and we suspect that we
are backing up some data with too high frequency .Could somebody forward
me criteria and benchmarks to score data for back-up purposes?

I already have thought of the following:

- availability requirements (< x hrs.; x hrs.- y hrs.; > y hrs.)

- frequency of changes to information (hourly; daily; weekly; monthly)

- volume of data that can be backed up in a certain time (< x Gb; xGb -
y Gb; > y Gb).

- Effort needed to re-construct operations since last successful back-up
( < x hrs./FTE; x hrs./FTE - y hrs./FTE; > y hrs./FTE and < X US$; x US$
- y US$; > y US$)

The benchmarks and criteria will be included in a questionnaire and sent
out to the sister offices for completion, so it should be straight
forward and easy to answer. Any further input will be highly
appreciated.
