Position:       Sr. Security Engineer
Location:       Ithaca, New York, United States

Position Summary
As a member of the IT Security Engineering team, assume a senior level of 
responsibility for the university's system and network security infrastructure 
and its response to security incidents.  Take a lead role in the evaluation, 
development and implementation of technologies for safeguarding the campus 
computing environment, including hardening systems, network vulnerability 
scanning, intrusion detection systems, and firewalls.  Collaborate with 
CIT’s Network Operations Center (NOC), the Contact Center and other CIT 
units in the on-going development and implementation of incident response 
tools, security services, and processes.  Provide a complete range of incident 
response services including threat assessment, preventive and corrective 
action, system remediation, investigation and analysis.  Partner with technical 
staff throughout CIT and the university in all aspects of IT security.
 
Will be expected to be part of a rotational on-call 24x7 status for security 
incident response. 
 



JOB REQUIREMENTS

Position Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.  Formal training and certification 
in security, network architecture, system administration an asset. 
 
Minimum five years experience taking a strong or lead technical role in 
security engineering, including both development of system and network security 
solutions (e.g., firewalls, vulnerability scanning systems, intrusion detection 
systems) and security operations (monitoring, scanning, incident response). 
Experience in a university setting is highly desirable. Strong familiarity with 
contemporary approaches to system and network security.  A deep and practical 
understanding of both the technical and the social issues in development and 
delivery of security solutions, generally the results of several years of 
progressive experience and responsibility.  Proven experience in IT security 
incident investigation, network traffic analysis, system assessment and 
remediation. Mastery of a wide range of security tools and hardware.  Strong 
familiarity with network architecture, Internet protocols and applications.  
In-depth knowledge of one or more operating systems:  Sun/Solaris, Lin
 ux, Windows, Mac OS.  In-depth knowledge of enterprise Windows services, 
including ActiveDirectory, Exchange, SQLServer an asset.  Ability to develop 
tools, software, and services using Perl, Python, PHP, .NET, or other languages 
an asset. Experience with secure programming practices an asset.  Proficient 
use of problem tracking systems, including report generation and tailoring of 
reports.  Superior analytical and problem-solving skills.  Must be able to work 
effectively in a dynamic, complex, team-based environment. Ability to 
prioritize multiple high-level tasks and to make sound judgment calls about 
security situations where the organization's reputation is at stake.  Strong 
service orientation.  Excellent written and oral skills including effectively 
communicating technical material to non-technical audiences and delivering 
formal and informal presentations to a variety of audiences. Responsibilities 
require tact, diplomacy and leadership skills, with a flexible and pos
 itive approach.
