This is a two-year fixed term position (benefits included) with a strong 
possibility of an extension at the end of the two year term.

Summary:

Reporting to the Technical Infrastructure Manager who in turn reports to the 
Director of Information Systems, this position will be responsible for the 
implementation and maintenance of all servers within the Vice Provost for 
Student Affairs (VPSA) division. 

This key position supports the technology- and applications-related systems for 
the Vice Provost of Student Affairs division, consisting of approximately 250 
full-time staff as well as part-time student and volunteer workers with a 
diverse set of applications. VPSA consists of a wide variety of small- to 
medium-sized student service organizations serving a cross-section of the 
student community at Stanford. These units include the Haas Center for Public 
Service, Residential Education, Bechtel International Center, the 
Registrar’s Office, centers serving ethnic and religious communities, the 
Career Development Center, the Graduate Life Office, Vaden Student Health 
Services, and others.

This position will be responsible for maintaining the highest possible level of 
performance, security, and availability of information technology, including 
web services, desktop devices and applications. (This position is not 
responsible for the network.) This position will also be required to provide 
mentoring and training to other technical staff who might serve in a backup 
capacity, as well as supervise a growing staff of desktop support personnel 
and, as needed, student workers. This is both a hands-on and leadership 
position requiring a comprehensive and strategic approach to systems 
administration.

Job Responsibilities:

Server Administration (70%)

• Supervise desktop support staff of up to five FTE.
• Specifies and adopts appropriate operating systems, databases, and 
security software for maintaining, storing, and securing information. Uses 
latest industry or community-source standards.
• Implements and maintains web servers that perform and deliver the latest 
approved web services.
• Maintains system, access and account policies. Ensures that these 
policies are effective and followed resulting in 99.5% availability.
• Installs and maintains load balancer and ensures that devices are RAID 
enabled and appropriate device redundancies and fail-over strategies are 
available and regularly tested.
• Establishes and maintains a backup and restore program; reviews backup 
and restore procedures on a constant basis for 100% coverage of required files.
• Researches and maintains support and maintenance contracts for hardware 
and software to ensure licenses are current.
• Implements hardware and software upgrades to support the VPSA's 
administrative applications.
• Works closely in coordination with and support of application developers 
and integrators within the unit or with consultants hired by the leadership of 
the unit.
• Provides input to the organization for establishing, planning, and 
maintaining a service support strategy and policy for the VPSA division.
• Assists division leadership in identifying necessary standards and 
implementing progressive standardization through the VPSA division.
• Develops and maintains group policies and automated software 
applications for server ands workstation applications.
• Performs capacity planning analysis on hardware and storage systems; 
identifies opportunities for server consolidation, performance enhancement, and 
scalable solutions.
• Develops framework and policies for file storage requirements and 
permissions, server accesses resulting in 99.5% availability.
• Provides and maintains detailed documentation of all implementations, 
changes, and solutions.
• Trains staff in the use and day-to-day management of servers.
• Stays current in education and certifications.

Daily Operations (30%)

• Maintains the Windows infrastructure. Includes support of Active 
Directory, Domain Name System, Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), Dynamic 
Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Web Server, Media Streaming, remote 
terminal services, and authentication protocols, backup and anti-virus 
solutions, as well as other tools that may apply.
• Supports multiple production and development Linux and other systems 
which run a variety of products including Oracle, Apache, and Tomcat.
• Schedules and participates in 24 X 7 support and on-call rotation.
• Devises necessary protocols and provides trouble-shooting analysis and 
triage.
• Documents requests for support and solutions provided.



JOB REQUIREMENTS

• 5 years professional experience in both Linux / Unix and Windows systems 
administration required
• 2 years lead role experience as a system engineer/administrator.
• BS in technical or related field required
• 2 years web server administration required
• 1 year professional shell and Perl scripting skills 
• Strong, demonstrated commitment to standardization of server 
environments and processes
• MCSE in Windows domain administration
• RedHat Linux certification
• Apache / Tomcat and Web Server administration desired
• Windows and/or Mac server administration background a plus
• Networking experience a plus
• Demonstrated experience in analyzing and recommending significant 
improvement in complex server environments. 
• Working knowledge of the needs of the student services administrations a 
plus. 
• Ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects at once, work 
independently, and work collaboratively with professional colleagues
• Ability to produce results within tight (often conflicting) deadlines. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

Other Relevant Information:

• Must be willing to participate in discipline-related professional 
conferences and learning opportunities
• Must be able to run cables in small crawl spaces.
• Must be able to lift and move computers up to 50 lbs.
• This is a regular, full-time position. Candidates must be able to work 
on-site from 9:00AM to 6:00PM.
• No travel required.
