Position: Security Researcher

ROLE:
Member of Research and Response Team researching characteristics of Spam and
Anti-Malware to provide detection, define product and associated tools and
systems. Responsible for the detection and associated techniques in the
Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus service. Aware of industry development in Spam and
Virus detection and able to map these developments into the MessageLabs
services as required. Project emphasis is on efficiency and configurability,
allowing the development of a highly available solution that can quickly be
adapted to meet the changing threat landscape.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Strengthening the SLAs of the Anti-Spam and/or Anti-Virus service by
maintaining and developing systems and tools to improve the level of service
offered.
2. Taking a leading role in the definition and creation of new and
enhanced systems and techniques to identify and combat Spam and Viruses
3. Active role in monitoring and responding to the Spam and Virus threat.
Work with Spam and AV Operations to raise the customer experience to the
highest level.
4. Producing requirements for virus and spam engine developments.
5. Major input to the planning process with specific responsibility for
estimates, with justification, for own work and constructive review of team
work.
6. Completing all tasks as defined and prioritised in the project plan,
ensuring all code is written, reviewed, tested and integrated with the rest of
the project code base and version control system.
7. Investigating False Positive and False Negative reports, resolving
defects and re-releasing the fixed detection.
8. Providing data on malware characteristics and trends.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

PROFILE OF JOB HOLDER:
Essential
• Educated to degree level in a scientific or computer related subject,
and have at least 5 years experience in a computing related research role
OR
• Have at least 8 years experience in a computing related research role.
• Ability to demonstrate creative solutions to problems and address
challenges in multiple problem domains.
• Ability to program in Perl and C/C++.
• Experience of data analysis, preferably through the application of
mathematical techniques.
• Ability to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of computing, operating
systems and CPU architectures.
• Development level experience of Linux or UNIX.
• Experience of working in a quality driven engineering process.
Desirable
• Understanding of various scripting languages (Javascript, VBScript,
etc.)
• Understanding of crypto-algorithms
• Knowledge of SMTP and RFC2821
• Knowledge of email, particularly MIME and RFC2822.
• Knowledge of HTTP and RFC2616
• Experience of development on Windows.
• Understanding of data compression algorithms
• Experience of System Administration on Linux/Unix.
• Working knowledge of internet protocols such as,FTP, TCP/IP and POP3.
• Knowledge of an assembly level language or intermediate code.
• Knowledge of internet systems, particularly DNS and SSH.
• Knowledge of Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus techniques.
• Knowledge of RPM creation and installation.
• Knowledge of at least one version control system.
• Experience of working within an internet security or service delivery
environment.
