Position: Security Engineer

Purpose or Summary Statement of Primary Duties and Responsibilities of Position
The Office of Technology Services requires an Information Security Engineer to
assist in building and executing an effective information security program for
the organization. In order to accomplish this mission we require individuals
who are passionate about technology and information security.
Principal Accountabilities
1. Architect and engineer new security systems; and evaluate technical
designs and work with appropriate personal and venders to coordinate upgrades
and maintenance to the Board’s IT infrastructure.
2. Provide oversight and/or management of OTS network security systems
such as internal and external firewalls, VPN servers and IDS systems; this
includes proactive monitoring of systems, and event response to system issues.
3. Work with Information Security team to develop a comprehensive security
program for the organization.
4. Review system and application design to ensure security is in
accordance with Board Policy.
5. Work with OTS managers to assist in the development and enforcement of
security policies and procedures.
6. Work with system administrators and application developers to secure,
monitor and validate their environment’s security.
7. Establish and enforce incident response procedures to properly respond
to security events.

**** You must reside within, or be prepared to move inside, the city limits of
Chicago, Illinois. No City of Chicago employee can live outside the city.
There is no relocation help for this position. ****
Skills:
Candidates must have a fundamental understanding of TCP/IP and how it is used
by modern applications and systems. Candidates should have experience with
information security technologies and operational practices in large
enterprises; have experience in engineering and administering firewalls, IDS,
and/or VPN systems. A strong programming ability with scripting languages is
desired.
A successful candidate will be able to: Architect and engineer new security
systems. Assist technical staff in securing their system or application
environment. Educate end-users and technical staff in order to promote
information security awareness. Work with management to plan and develop valid
risk assessment objectives in order to guide the information security program.
Assist in the development of new security initiatives.
Ideal candidates should also have subject matter expertise in at least one of
the following technology fields: Networking, UNIX administration, large scale
Microsoft Active Directory deployments, and application development.
Type of Education Required:
BA or BS from accredited university
Type of Experience and Number of Years:
5 years experience in the information security field
3 years experience in large heterogeneous enterprise level IT organizations
5+ years experience in information technology field
