Position:       Security Engineer
Location:       Austin, Texas, United States
Type:           Permanent F/T

Monthly salary: $3750, but quite negotiable depending on qualifications.
Hours per week: 40.00 Standard from 1200PM to 900PM
Location: Austin (main campus)

General Notes: Initially, while training, hours of employment will be 8:00am to 
5:00pm. Normal work hours will then transition to 12:00pm to 9:00pm. This 
position falls under the Information Security Office (ISO) section of ITS. 

Purpose of This Position:  Assist in the design, implementation and monitoring 
of the IT security program, focusing on identifying network vulnerabilities and 
intrusions and then designing, planning and executing solutions to continuously 
improve security of the University.

Essential Functions: Assist implementation, review, & administration for 
security management tools, security assessment software, intrusion detection 
systems, firewall/virtual private networks, & other related technologies. 
Collaborate & communicate with many technical staff from diverse backgrounds in 
large, highly distributed computing environment. Assist with implementation of 
host security administration standards, support security system design & 
assessments. Perform security log reviews, analysis & penetration testing, 
assist with incident detection, response activities, post-incident forensic 
reviews, & maintain strict confidence in handling sensitive information. 
Communicate with IT users whose knowledge may range from novice to highly 
advanced levels. 


JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree. One year of experience in systems 
design, analysis and programming. One year experience in information security 
or auditing information technology, or experience resolving complex security 
issues in diverse, decentralized IT environments. Training in information 
security or related experience in lieu of education. Equivalent combination of 
relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree with major field in Computer 
Science, or related computer, engineering, or technical field and more than 
required experience in network design, analysis, and security. Present or 
recent work experience at UT along with a basic understanding of architecture 
and operation of the University's technology infrastructure. One year customer 
support or help desk experience. Experience in investigating misuse and in 
incident handling. Current experience with network protocols and network 
monitoring techniques, and UNIX or Windows server security administration. 
Familiarity with vulnerability assessment tools, data integrity checking tools, 
network intrusion detection systems, commercial firewalls, and VPN systems. 
Working knowledge of UNIX, Windows, Cisco, DNS, and TCP/IP. Certification in 
information security or network technology (CISSP, GCIH, etc.). Must have 
excellent oral and written communication skills.
