VULNERABILITY RESEARCH MANAGER


nCircle is seeking a manager to lead our Vulnerability and Exposure Research 
Team (VERT) in Toronto.

We are looking for a leader who has a passion for building and developing 
staff, developing new ideas, managing ongoing projects, and getting things done 
with a team of entrepreneurial and intelligent engineers.

We are a team with diverse backgrounds and the ideal candidate for the position 
will have a similarly diverse background: product development, IT operations 
and information security are some of the backgrounds of our team members. 
Vulnerability research and development is unlike any of those tasks, so you 
should think quickly and be willing to re-evaluate your management style to fit 
the structure of the work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Tactical Management and Leadership of a world class vulnerability signature 
development team.
* Inspire and mentor team members to perform their jobs with passion.
* Act as a coach and mentor for team members in both technical and 
non-technical tasks.
* Assist team members in solving difficult technical research and development 
problems.
* Set goals and project milestones, and manage team members to accomplish those 
goals.
* Work with VERT management structure to:
      o Assess team and individual performance and set both short term and long 
term strategic and tactical goals.
      o Create strategic initiatives to increase both the efficiency and 
effectiveness of the VERT team.
      o Determine strategic initiatives to improve the coverage and accuracy of 
our product, IP360.
* Keep abreast of new developments in security, particularly attack and 
vulnerability detection conditions and operating system/application 
identification techniques, as well as software and hardware versions.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS

* Demonstrated ability to lead and energize a team of 10-15 software developers 
or IT staff in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
* 3-5+ years experience in technical management as manager of a software 
development organization, IT operations group or R&D team in a start-up 
environment.
* BA/BS in computer science or like discipline or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrated ability building and developing teams, including staff 
development and growth.
* Demonstrated passion to attempt the impossible, make audacious commitments 
and deliver regularly on promises.
* Demonstrated ability to execute and exceed expectations in a fast-paced 
environment.
* Excellent organizational and time management skills.
* Ability to think through complex problems quickly, and mentor team members 
(both junior and senior) in problem solving and research skills.
* Ability to clearly and precisely communicate task and project information to 
technical team members, and clearly communicate project and team status to 
management.
* Experience working in a delivery-oriented, customer centric environment.
* Contagious passion and enthusiasm for security in general and vulnerability 
management in particular.
* Ability to learn new protocols, languages, and architectures quickly and 
convey that knowledge in coaching VERT team members.
* Strong understanding of analysis methodologies and research techniques, and 
an ability to assist others in applying those methodologies.

DESIRED SKILLS

* Recognized expertise with computer and network security standards. 
Professional certification such as GIAC, CISSP, not required, but recommended.
* Intimate knowledge of computer operating systems, network protocols and 
software development and engineering processes.
* Some knowledge of security vulnerability exploit code, as well as an ability 
to understand and reverse-engineer code to exploit classes of attacks such as 
buffer overflows, format string attacks, and integer overflows.
* Knowledge of intrusion detection filters, signature definitions, and 
vulnerability scripting languages such as NASL and OVAL.
