Internet Security Systems (ISS) is the trusted expert to the Fortune Global 500 
and world governments, providing products and services that guarantee 
protection against Internet threats.
 This position performs direct Engineering support to customers (the term 
"customers" includes QA, Development, Technical Support, Sales, and 
external customers) on field problems that have been escalated to Engineering 
from Customer Support. As such, this position will involve some travel. The 
ideal Engineer must have superior troubleshooting and advanced debugging skills 
and be comfortable with direct customer interaction while presenting a 
professional image (especially external customers). When not directly 
supporting customers, this position will work to pro-actively search for 
potential issues on released products, and make recommendations and develop 
supporting materials and tools for resolving such issues. Because of the nature 
of this position, the engineer must be or quickly become an expert with the 
inner workings of the supported products. This specific position will report 
into the Protection Appliances EMG team and be responsible for engineering 
escala
 tions around Network Sensor, Proventia A, Proventia G, and Proventia M 
products. Because of the nature of these products, experienced C and C++ 
development skills are required as are network level engineering skills 
encompassing switch, router, and firewall technologies.  
 Responsibilities  
 Essential Functions: 

Work with Technical Support, QA and Development engineers in resolving 
escalated field issues, and when necessary, travel to customer sites to resolve 
field issues. 

In resolving escalated field issues, identify where in the code the problem is 
occurring, and when practical, devise or manage the creation of a code fix that 
will resolve such issues. 

Maintain a close working relation with QA to keep abreast of field problem 
trends  this will include attending weekly/regular meetings with core 
Engineering teams  and Technical Support. 

In the field, become the technical focal point for ISS for the specific field 
problem. As such, if periodic meetings with customer become necessary, engineer 
becomes the technical representative/point-of contact for the technical aspects 
of the issue. 

Through various types of testing and product awareness, proactively search  
for, identify, and recommend fixes to potential field problems within released 
products--ideally, before external customers discover the problems. 

Develop product related KBA and whitepaper's as necessary to help clarify or 
educate Tech Support and external customers with certain areas of the supported 
products  or to document workarounds to certain product defects.  



JOB REQUIREMENTS

 Skills & Knowledge Requirements: 

Must have excellent project management and coordination skills. 

Must have excellent troubleshooting skills in the area of computer networking, 
TCP/IP communications, network deployments, and software debugging. 

Must be proficient in software development life-cycle, processes, concepts and 
a strong understanding of software engineering practices and principles. 

Must be proficient with most ISS Proventia Appliance products. 

Must have excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills 

Must be able to work independently and/or with a team. 

Must have practical knowledge and understanding of Internet protocols  (TCP, 
UDP, IP, ICMP) and their inner workings. 

Must have strong fundamental knowledge and understanding of LAN technology and 
Networking Switch and Routing fabrics 

Must have a good understanding of Internet security, and be familiar with the 
solutions that exist in the market. 

Must have strong fundamental knowledge and experience in C and C++ application 
development. 

Qualifications: 

At least a Bachelors of Science degree. 

At least 4 years hands-on experience in a software engineering, QA, and product 
support. 

At least 2+ years hands-on experience with Internet Security System's network 
security-related products and management consoles. 

2+ years experience with managing and coordination projects 

4+ years experience in software application development in C and C++ 

4+ years experience in software application development for Linux platforms. 

Windows and Solaris software application development experience is a plus.
