Description:
The Cyber Security Group seeks to hire dynamic individuals with strong 
credentials and experience in cyber security research. Cyber Security is one of 
the most challenging and exciting work environments in the Lab. The incumbent 
will have the opportunity to influence strategy research agenda. The incumbent 
will have a unique opportunity to provide leadership and be part of a team 
focused on challenges that range from basic science to technology insertion.  

The environment is highly challenging and complex. The scope of investigation 
includes: design of secure networks, communication and telecommunication 
systems. Challenges include mapping the incumbents in  depth understanding of 
existing network protocols, hardware and IOS's to investigation of new, secure, 
robust network protocols, and or internetworking systems  A passion for 
understanding the state of the art  of complex, highly interconnected network 
systems, systems operation and ideas for advancing the state of the art are 
essential.

All applicants should have a demonstrated fundamental understanding of both 
widely deployed and emerging protocols and transports.  Applicants must also 
have an extensive list of peer-reviewed publications and experience obtaining 
and securing research funding.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an established national (for a level 5) or 
international (for a level 6) reputation for researching and developing new 
methods for enhancing performance and resolving inefficiencies in network 
protocols, intrusion detection systems, network interface cards, network 
measurement and analysis tools, firewalls, and related middleware to facilitate 
ultra high-speed network capabilities.  

Must have in-depth knowledge of LAN/WAN hardware and network layer protocols, 
VPN's, Security, QoS, Remote/Local Access,  Multi-Service (Voice and Video), 
Campus/MAN, WAN, Optical Networking, Transmission Systems, Wireless and 
evolving protocols such as IPv6.  

Knowledge of general computer system and network architectures, hardware, and 
operating system theory  network principles and troubleshooting techniques  
fiber optics systems related to data transmission and applications  data 
communications, computer network, and distributed systems theory  Windows, 
Macintosh, UNIX and Linux operating systems  TCP/IP internals (as applied to 
network backbone and infrastructure resources and related systems) software 
development using  and "C" languages is desired. Practical experience 
or course work in physics and/or modeling and simulation using tools such as 
Mathematica is valued.

The incumbent shall demonstrate the capability to apply knowledge to perform 
research, design, development, engineering of very complex computer networks 
and distributed computing systems. Knowledge of network monitoring, testing, 
installation, maintenance and configuration management of computer network and 
distributed computing systems is desired. The incumbent will be expected to 
lead, direct, and participate in medium to large (3 to 12 person) research, 
engineering, and development teams. Excellent interpersonal skills and the 
ability to clearly communicate technical information and instructions to 
non-technical staff and managers is essential. The incumbent shall have 
excellent written, spoken, and presentation skills. The incumbent shall 
demonstrate very mature project and fiscal management skills and methods.

Placement level will be dependent upon management's assessment of the selected 
candidate's skills, experience, and ability to contribute.  In order to reduce 
cycle time, internal and external solicitations of interest may run concurrent  
however, qualified PNNL staff will be given first consideration.

Minimum Requirements: **
Level 5 - A PhD in Computer Science plus 7+ years experience in leading large 
teams of researchers to develop networking technologies. Should be an emphasis 
on research/development to enable high performance computing.  An international 
reputation in the scientific community is required. 

Level 6- A PhD in Computer Science plus 10+ years experience in leading large 
teams of researchers to develop networking technologies.  Should be an emphasis 
on research/development to enable high performance computing.  An international 
reputation in the scientific community is required.
