JOB DESCRIPTION
---------------------------------------------------
Position: Application Security Engineer
Location: Redwood City, California, US
Type: Permanent F/T
Closing Date: 02/23/2005

SENIOR SYNC ENGINEER (WIRELESS SECURITY)
This team will create the second generation of the company’s “sync
technology” allowing it to expand its product offerings in the
consumer market.

Position Level
• This will be the core technology team in the company these positions
are critical. The “sync” protocol runs on almost all system
software components: handsets (J2ME, Brew, Symbian, Palm, Pocket PC, Smart
Phone) data connectors in the enterprise (Personal Edition, Server Edition)
and on the software in the cloud operated by the carrier. Therefore, this team
will be working horizontally with all engineers responsible for the major
architectural components of the system.

Additionally, all features that are made visible on the client have a
foundation in the “ sync” technology. So this team will work
directly with product marketing to chart the direction of the core technology
for the company.

Programming Skills
• Must be an active programmer. This is not just an architecture
position. This position requires both solid architecture and programming skills.

Language Skills
• Must be an EXPERT in C++ and Java

Networking Skills
• Advanced networking understanding is required. “ sync” is
an application level protocol that sits on top of TCP/IP. The solution must
deal with a variety networking issues: communication through the firewall, VPN,
Carrier IP allocation, dynamic DNS, IP SEC, SSL.
• Internal knowledge of TCP/IP would be useful, though not required.

Protocol Skills / Distributed Computing / Database skills
• “sync” is an application level protocol. It has a
distributed commit and update model. It must recover if the connection is lost.
The candidate must fully understand how to create a system architecture that
will provide an error free, distributed communication protocol on an unreliable
communication medium.

Use of distributed protocols such as CORBA or SOAP is not sufficient.
“sync” is a much more complicated protocol and the candidate needs to
be able to design a state of the art next generation version of this protocol.

System Skills
• “sync” must run on a variety of platforms. The
candidate’s knowledge of system issues such as byte ordering, memory
allocation, idiosyncratic limitations (eg: Palm), multi-threading, process
management, etc. must be extremely solid. The “sync” team will
normally be the first to “touch” a new platform, coming to grips and
designing foundation software that allows this platform to support
“sync”.

Security Skills
• One of the key advantages of the Company’s solution is
security. We do a Diffie-Hellman key exchange to create a common key and
establish an end to end 128 bit AES encryption channel. The candidate should be
able to evaluate and eliminate system security design limitations to provide
the industry’s best secure mobile connection solution.

The candidate needs to have a solid understanding of Security technology and
software Integrity design principles.

BRIEF COMPANY BACKGROUNDER:
The Company is a startup in the wireless space which markets email, calendar,
and contact sync solutions through phone carriers. Product is customized and
branded under the carrier brands, e.g. Xpress Mail (for Cingular) and Office
Freedom (for Orange). The Company believes that marketing through the
carriers, via their brand, is the strongest market position possible.

In this space, carriers are looking for a competing, higher margin solution to
RIM. Carriers offer our software to their customers for free. They make
their money on data service charges. This approach is superior to marketing
software directly to consumers or adding the software cost to the phone
platforms.

Some of our significant carriers are:
• In the US – Sprint and Cingular/AT&T
• In the UK and Europe – O2 and Orange
• In Japan – DoCoMo and KDDI
This carrier network opens up a potential market of over 144 Million
subscribers. Success for us will be a result of keeping its carrier customers
happy and helping carriers drive adoption by continually pushing the
technology.

In terms of work effort, work environment, work process, etc., the company is
a startup. People take responsibility, work very hard, and are serious about
their contributions.

The company is sitting on solid cash position and is pre-IPO.
