From memory, on NAV, I used to have a share on the network that had all the
downloaded defs in them so that clients could update from the central
server, so you could check via the filename and the properties of the file I
guess.
There's a folder on the client too-not sure where though.

IIRC, no.  You will need to look at the version info of the definition
file itself.
