Pix 501 (check if this model supports before buying. If not I'm fairly certain
a 505 does and I know the 515 definitely does) plus WebSense then. The pix
part of the equasion can be purchased off ebay. If you want one new I think a
515R goes for like 5K, but I haven't priced pix's in a few years. Dell or cdw
would be your best bet for pricing Cisco.

Just an aside folks: the OP made a request for solutions and set a
specific technical requirement. Granted, solutions do exist outside that
requirement (even very very good ones). And even though you may not
agree with the strategic direction taken that's reflected in that
requirement, if the solution fails to meet the requirements, it's a
non-starter.

"This program must be able to run on a windows box". Period. *nix-based
solutions might be cheap, easy, and flexible, but you can't just ignore
the customer's requirements.

In my workplace a strategic decision has been made: we don't run Linux.
I can't say whether that's wise or justified or plain stupid. I don't
get to set strategy for my employer. And neither do consultants tasked
with finding an internet usage monitoring solution.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Hello List,

I am looking for an idea/program to monitor users internet
usage. Due
to the nature of the customer who requires the monitoring
carried out,
this program must be able to run on a windows box and needs
to be very
reasonably priced (I have no control over budget
unfortunately). I am
aware of programs such as ISA server (too expensive) and
squid (*nix
based). Any other sugesstions would be great.Customers network is
round a bout 20 workstations that need to be monitored, so
pretty small in reality.

Looking forward to all your help.

Actually you can get Squid for Windows -
http://www.squid-cache.org/Download/binaries.dyn.

I still think Squid with squidGuard
(http://www.squidguard.org/index.html)
with Shalla's Blacklists (http://squidguard.shalla.de/shallalist.html)
running on any Linux server would be the best choice.
Download Ubuntu server and install on any old PC, or a very
cheap new box, and make this the proxy server. You can then
access this box using a web browser if you add Webmin
(http://www.webmin.com/) and SARG - Squid Anaysis Report
Generator (part of *nix distros) is available though the
Webmin interface.

The whole package would not cost more than $200 if you bought
the PC, otherwise it is all free!
