For military grade software it would have to have been through a
formal product certification process like ITSEC or more likely CC.

Products suitable for Governmental use (Australian) are listed on the
DSD's Evaluated Products List
http://www.dsd.gov.au/infosec/evaluation_services/epl/epl.html. Two
secure erase products are listed there at EAL2 (Evaluation Assurance
Level).

The common critieria portal should list all other Secure erase
products that have been evaluated through CC.

If you are serious and want a level of assurance of the product's
functionality especially given the critical task you are relying upon
it for I would recommend selecting a product that has been certified
over one that has not.
