The importance of Reverse Engineering in PenTesting

Subject: The importance of Reverse Engineering in PenTesting

Hi, guys.
I am relatively new to the penetration testing world.
What do you think about the Reverse Engineering in pen testing software
products?
Is it a fundamental layer in the procedure or is it only a 'suggested step' for
in-deep security assessment?

Best regards.
