I would encrypt the the files before deleting them. If they ever get recovered, they would at least be encrypted. I would use something like truecrypt.

Excuse me, n00b over here... but... Maybe you can create a trueCrypt volume slightly smaller than the size of the drive, then dump that trueCrypt file in there.
