It is possible to directly access the hardware from a virtual enviornment.  If 
you have some questions on this, there are several good academic research 
projects going on.  www.cerias.purdue.edu/reassure is one...

To my knowledge there have been a few cases of people directly accessing the 
hardware, but I don't think that they are published results.
