I actually believe that the 1 in 3 is pretty close despite the actual report cases. Why you may ask? This is a crime ideally executed when intended target is more than an acquaintance, and likely a relative. Moreover, with the enactment of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, credit reporting agencies quickly started Co-mingle credit, debit and employment information for parents and children, siblings, etc., and a particular Nasty little trick, attaching a deceased parents still accruing debt to adult child without any prior cooperative Credit agreements between either party. -----Original Message----- From: listbounce@securityfocus.com [mailto:listbounce@securityfocus.com] On Behalf Of Saqib Ali Sent: Thursday, December 14, 2006 11:41 PM To: security-basics; cryptography@metzdowd.com Subject: 1 in 3 US residents are potential identity theft victim? not really. however Privacy Rights Clearinghouse reports that 100,000,000 personal records have ended up in criminal hands since 2005. See: http://www.privacyrights.org/ar/chrondatabreaches.htm That does not mean 100 million people have become victims of identity theft. And there is no reason to believe that these records have ended someone's hand who plans to abuse them. But with US population of 295,734,134 (CIA numbers) there is good chance that one of friend is a potential identity theft victim. saqib http://www.full-disk-encryption.net --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This list is sponsored by: ByteCrusher Detect Malicious Web Content and Exploits in Real-Time.
