Anonymous FTP Alternative

Subject: Anonymous FTP Alternative

We are looking for an alternative to the use of an anonymous FTP server. One
alternative I envision would allow some sort of loose self-registration by
individuals. I'm thinking that they would be prompted for a username/password.
Individuals would need to register by entering their email address as the
username. Then we'd email them with a password. If it's a valid email address
.............. You get the idea. Has anyone had experience with anything like
this?
