Connections Work Only One Way

I'm upgrading my systems from Slackware-10.2 to Slackware-11.0 and have
come across a ssh/scp error that I cannot resolve.

The network has one server/workstation (running Slackware-11.0 with a
2.6.19.2 kernel), one notebook (running Slackware-11.0 with a 2.6.18.6
kernel), and one laptop (running Slackware-10.2 with a 2.4.31 kernel).

The desktop (server/workstation) can ssh/scp to both portables.
Permissions are correct (0700 for ~/.ssh and 0600 for the files in that
directory) on all machines.

The two portables can ssh/scp between themselves.

Neither portable can ssh/scp to the desktop. The error is
"ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host." Invoking
ssh with the '-vv' option does not provide me with any greater insight:

OpenSSH_4.4p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8d 28 Sep 2006
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0
debug1: Connecting to salmo [192.168.55.1] port 22.
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: identity file /home/rshepard/.ssh/identity type -1
debug1: identity file /home/rshepard/.ssh/id_rsa type -1
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN'
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'Proc-Type:'
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type 'DEK-Info:'
debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----END'
debug1: identity file /home/rshepard/.ssh/id_dsa type 2
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

Google reveals others having this problem in the past, but nothing I saw
helped me.

  I'd greatly appreciate some insight.
