It's almost a sure thing your OpenSSh was compiled without large file support. If you can't upgrade it, your only real option is to somehow use smaller files.
How about avoiding the issue of large file support in OpenSSH entirely:
ssh sol8 dd if=bigfile | dd of=bigfile
(while logged in to sun5.)
