With little help from pppd you can build a VPN connection withoutworries using 
OpenSSH...Check out this manual: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/ppp-ssh/
I myself use a simple bash script to establish the tunnel. And thebenefits over 
gre/ipnip tunnels are enormous.. You have a reallysecured channel.. not some id 
encapsulated one... and you run thetraffic over TCP connection which allows you 
to run the tunnel behinda NAT.
