When I try to copy some data over the network with scp I get the following rates: - copy data from OpenBSD to a Debian machine: "scp user@obenbsd:data ." output: "data 100% 100MB 483.0KB/s 03:32" - copy data from OpenBSD to a Mac: "scp user@openbsd:data ." output: "data 1% 1856KB 57.4KB/s 29:12 ETA"
I would be checking the interface speed and duplex settings on both the switch (if possible) and the boxes, especially the OpenBSD one and make sure they match. See the ifconfig(8) man page for the "media" and "mediaopt" options. For comparison, I get ~5MB/s copying from my OpenBSD firewall (a P2/400, using the arcfour cipher), so with faster CPUs on both ends you should get close to wire speed.

If the speed/duplex settings don't help, you might also try another
type of ethernet interface.

Good judgement comes with experience. Unfortunately, the experience
usually comes from bad judgement.
