failed in exactly the same way as Peter's attempt.

Ah, OK.  I just tried it again without my patch, and indeed, it fails
as described above.  But then when I apply the patch that I sent to the
list a few days ago, it works fine.  (Sorry, it's been so long since I
did this that I'd forgotten exactly what symptom my patch addressed.
The mtime on it is September 17 of last year.)

So you can either use my patch, or try Darren's fix.  His is definitely
better in the long run, although of course you'll need to have autoconf
and friends installed and know how to use them....
