G'day Sabrina, I presume you have checked the network interface setup? My first thought with reports like this is to check that the slow server is not using a different duplex setting to what the switch has selected (usually a problem with auto-negotiate). Of course this would affect other network service performance were it the case. After that, given that the authetication process is compute intensive, I would look for some difference in the server that might prevent sshd from getting enough CPU time. HTH Cheers, Frank. -----Original Message----- From: Sabrina Lautier [mailto:slautier@amadeus.net] Sent: Thursday, 30 December 2004 1:34 AM To: secureshell@securityfocus.com Subject: ssh connection incredibly low Hi, I compiled openssh exactly the same way on 2 identical HP-UX 11.11 servers (same patches level, same hardware config, etc.) and for an unknown reason the ssh connection to one (server1) is very quick but very slow to the other one (server2)... I traced the connection to both of them, and the second one get stuck at this level: debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 Note1: the user home dir is NFS mounted on both machines => same home dir from both servers. Note2: the server load is about the same on both machines. $ ssh -vv server2 OpenSSH_3.8.1p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d 17 Mar 2004 debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to ncegc201 [172.16.133.12] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/identity type -1 debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----BEGIN' debug2: key_type_from_name: unknown key type '-----END' debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa type 1 debug1: identity file /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 !!!
