If slack isn't configured to use pam then u need to add the following to the configure line: --with-md5-passwords
This because of the fact that the shadow file on a slackware config uses md5 passwords.


It was always mentioned in the installation notes iirc.

Anyway, i guess adding that switch will do the trick.
