I have a frustrating problem. Sometime in the recent past, my ssh client
stopped working on my RedHat WS 3 box.

Why it acts this way I have not been able to figure out. If I ssh IN to the
box all is fine. From that window then if I do something like "ssh
bull@zany.admin.uni.edu" it tries to open an xwindow password prompt.

Make sure /dev/tty has the correct permissions (mode 0666) and, if you have it enabled, it's writable in your selinux policy.

Good judgement comes with experience. Unfortunately, the experience
usually comes from bad judgement.
