I actually wrote the Mile2 course, along with some others. We wrote it in response to the poor content produced by the EC-Council which was badly written in broken English, out of date and in some cases just plainly incorrect!
I no longer work for Mile2 as I now dedicate myself fulltime to penetration testing rather than split it between testing and authoring/teaching. Due to this, I can offer you an 'inside', unbiased view on the courseware.
It's pretty good actually! It is kept up to date with bi-annual updates and a modular course which can be updated seperately along with hands on labs after each module. This hands on element is written by real world pen testers, such as myself, that reflect real world actions.
You are right, it does not have the global face of the global EC-Council (4 men from the far east!) but surely it is the course that matters? Of course, it depends a lot on the quality of the instructor as to exactly how much you learn, there is nothing I can tell you about that as the instructors change.
In the interest of balance, have you thought about any of the Foundstone courses? The company is at the forefront of pen testing and there courses have good reviews. http://www.foundstone.com/
If you are in the UK, a Scottish company has written a new course about penetration testing and they say that they have written it about penetration testing and not about hacking. So it should concentrate on the kind of work you will do as a pen tester and not waste time in cool and funky, but useless lessons on actions you simply do not do in testing engagements. The training company is learningit and the guy who wrote it works for www.dns.co.uk, check out http://www.learningit.com/checkpoint/VaPT.asp
I advise anyone that wants some pen testing training that they study the course description and outline carefully, ask for a bio of the instructor and if you can, see if you can get a sample of the courseware.
Whatever you go for, have fun on it and pump the instructor for as much information as you can.
later,
Hello All,
I just had a quick question pertaining to Penetration Testing Certifications. Has anyone taken or heard much about Mile2 Training? They provide two training courses/certifications "Certified Penetration Tester Specialist" (CPTS) & "Certified Penetration Tester Expert" (CPTE). I was wondering what others in the field thought of these courses/certifications. They don't seem to be widely recognized yet, but (is that going to change)? I took the CEH course a few years ago and was thoroughly disappointed with the content and the course all together. I was wondering if Mile2 was different.
Any comments/suggestions?
Thanks, Sparky
