defining the scope ( or ROE ) with your customer prior to pentesting is very critical, and can encompas a wide range of "what is allowed". IMHO a pen-test should be just that, a no-holds-barred all out attempt to circumvent applied security measures at all costs.
Well then, let's break out the Barrett rifles and the armored humvees and assault the datacenter. After all, physical security is one of the logical domains that can be tested. Better yet, let's nuke the datacenter for a DOS. After all, no holds barred......
