Hi Hank, i think if you want to have own distro as small as possible or as customized as possible than is the best way some like LFS (linux from scratch - http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ ). The pros are mentioned above. Your own distro can be really small and reach all you requirements, but cons are it may take long time if never had did that, it can be pretty exhaustive, and you have to know lot of about architecture of linux os. Next way, which you have mentioned is modifying of existing distro, this way can be more useful for beginning distro maker. My suggestion is to modify some distro like brutalware or SDL linux. It's gonna be sufficient and time saving... P.S: If you will be thinking about LFS so let me know please Hope this helps, korCZis On 21 Apr 2006 05:00:46 -0000, Hank@baitntackle.com <Hank@baitntackle.com> wrote:
Hey Guys, I'm looking to create my own pentesting distro.. I really like BackTrack and Auditor but would like to fill in the gaps adding some tools for VoIP and App Testing.. I have played with about every distro so far- Knoppix Kanotix Whax LInux Fire WAR Linux Slax - Kill Bill Slax - Frodo Ubuntu Linspire So far I'm would really like to stick with debian based distros for my distro. Would it be best to start with something like Kanotix and remaster it?? Or just start from scrath with debain and compile cloop and unionFS? The only thing is that I see that Slax uses modules and has an easy to use remastering system. I'm looking for Pros/ Cons of starting from scratch vs. just modifying another distro. I have used linux for a couple years and can get around pretty well but no expert.
