Some good answers so far but I'll throw my two cents in the hat as well:

The "OCTAVE Methodology" is a self-directed/do-it-yourself audit method.

For a bit of technical reading the VISA/Mastercard PCI requirement is
robust. If you can comply with the PCI requirements your in pretty
good shape (assuming you didnt lie on the paperwork). The PCI isnt
exactly in your field of but it's worth reading at least once to put
things in perspecitve.

frequently than the annual 3rd party audits.

My question is, is there a software package, a "canned" audit that can be 
performed? Basic info gathering questions regarding authentication controls, 
network documentation(how and where it is stored), question that should be 
asked regarding wireless AP and other basic security questions?
