I would like to know if it is possible to do like a traceroute
but on layer 2.

Unfortunately, nothing like this exists
due to the difference in the way layer 3
and layer 2 protocols work (at least ethernet,
atm, and ppp). Layer 2 information is always local 
to the current segment/link.

You'll have to discover your ip nodes and then collect
layer 2 information some other way (which often requires
connecting to them; it could be SNMP or something else
depending on the device).
