We use the 9100's with a 1920x1200 resolution with no issue using Win XP and Fedora Core 2.

Most of the hardware build details were taken from this site which was Google'd and nothing to do with me.

I currently have the D800, the only complaint I have is with the WUXGA
15.4 screen. In order to uses the full screen u have to run at 19200X1200. this stretches the screen causing graphics designed for 800X600 or 1024X768 to look horrible and blocky. I have scoured DELL support for a resolution but until graphics designers consider these strange resolutions the problem is here to stay.

I have a precision M60, it comes with gigabit ethernet, wireless, nice
HDD
(40Gb), a huge screen and a Nvidia Quadro FX Go700 card the support
multiple
monitors. Currently having it working only with Windows XP SP2 and
running
MS Office 2003 smoothly. It has almost the same architecture than the
D600
so I believe it can run Linux without troubles.

My 2 cents...

I have a dell xps laptop and it runs great, i have the uxga screen too,
not
sure which screen your goin for. the only thing i dont care about for
dell
is they only offered ATI cards and no nvidia's, but that might be
different
for the model your looking for. as for the wireless, i have a slot for
it
but i didn't buy their card cuz i didnt know if it'd be supported or
not, so
i've bought a dlink card seperate and have had no troubles. overall,
compatibility with drivers or hardware including acpi. btw im running
slackware. if ya have any other questions email me back personally if
you
want. goodluck.

I am about to be purchasing a laptop and I was wanting the

advice of

the list. I know this can be a very personal topic for

some people,

but I have to throw it out there anyway.

Here's my situation...I'm about to be attending a degree program in Information Assurance and Forensics. I also have my own business doing a variety of things computer related. At some point I would like to delve more heavily into vulnerability assesment,

penetration

testing, and possibly forensics. I'm looking for a laptop

that will

be flexible enough to meet all these needs.

This is what my immediate plans for the laptop are: for my

business,

I need to have some of the basic MS Office suite on it, as

well as MS

Publisher. I plan on making it into a dual-boot machine with some flavor of linux. I don't care to use a live linux CD

because I want

to be able to store logs, settings, and other data onto the

drive, and

I hope to eventually use linux for everything except the MS

stuff that

I have to use on occasion for my business.

Because of the variety of things I plan on doing, I want to get one that has a serial and a parallel port in addition to the

USB that they

pretty much all come with now. It would be nice to have at

least one

PCMCIA slot as well. I plan to do some wireless network

assessment,

so it needs to be wireless capable, but for my purposes

being able to

attach an external antennae for extra range isn't that important.

What I'm looking at right now is the Dell Latitude D600. I've supported and purchased a lot of Dell desktop computers and

have been

very happy with them and I have run Knoppix-STD on a Dell laptop and

everything ran well.

The D600 has the ports I'd like.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Any capibilities that you

think I've

missed?

Thanks,
David
