Looking for specific information on 'how' nessus discovers ports

Subject: Looking for specific information on 'how' nessus discovers ports
Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2007 11:27:35 -0500
Sorry for the difficulty of this question - I couldn't find anything on
google or in the list archives.

I am looking for specific information on how Nessus performs TCP
discovery when performing a scan. I'm using Nessus 3.06, under Ubuntu,
using the Nessus TCP scanner. I do have ARP ping enabled. (as in the
technical details regarding how it says "this port is listening, this
port isn't, this machine is listening, this machine isn't.)

My apologies for my .signature, but nothing I can do about it.
