Not that I want to step on Michel's toes, but I run Nessus just fine under Gentoo, albeit not from emerge, so I wonder if there's something else going on... How did you have the "Ping the remote host" port scanner configured in your earlier scans? Were you doing a TCP ping and if so, what were you specifying for the TCP ping destination port(s)? Have you tried sniffing traffic from one of your targets to see what's coming from / returning to the Nessus server? Also, in a different message you said the "nessus.messages" file was empty. [I assume you meant "nessusd.messages".] I would expect it would at least hold information about when Nessus starts and connections from clients. Are you sure you're looking at the correct file? You should be able to figure out its location by running "nessusd -s | fgrep logfile".
