Let port-scanning out for the moment, because I don't have the NMAP
plug-in loaded.
1) you don't need the Nmap plugin to be able to run portscans from
Nessus -- and using Nmap is not recommended.
2) You MUST have some port scanners running if you want meaningful
results from Nessus.
* - I just didn't want the conversation to get off the rail. I
have all of the port scanners select and am scanning the privileged ports
(1-1024)
Anyway, I suspect that your problem is elsewhere, maybe the ping plugin
is not working. This would mean that raw IP (pcap or Winpcap) is
broken on your machine.
* - I can ping and nmap from the console to any machine on the
subnet
The server is a vanilla instance of Gentoo, so while it's possible
something is filtering it "out of the box"
Gentoo does nothing "out of the box", not even networking and
definitely no firewalling :)
It may have been configured by hand, though...
* - Vanilla defined by " kernel is compiled with default ethernet
drivers installed". I haven't installed any additional modules that would
affect communication.
