system locking up during scans

Subject: system locking up during scans
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 10:53:56 -0600
I am doing some scans of external systems at my office and have a box, the
only one available to me at the time setup with CentOS 4.4 on a P4 2.8 with
512 megs ram. It is running a minimal install of the OS and does nothing
but Nessus. I start a scan or two /24's hitting all the ports and using all
the checks and it locks up for hours, it will then do a burst of checks (I
gather this from my logs and my IDS) and then freeze up again. I have it
set to only do 5 checks per host and a limit of 5 hosts at a time. I figure
with it set that low it should be able to handle that load, am I missing
something? I have not used Nessus in a while but never had problems like
this before. Thanks in advance for any help you can lend. I am using the
current version of everything, it is a fresh box loaded on Monday.
