I’ve installed Nessus on my machine and was able to run 2 scans but frequently getting the “Can not connect to Nessus server” error message.

Can you verify that's the error message you get? I don't find that exact text either in the CLI client or NessusClient. Also, which version and which client are you using?

The default 127.0.0.1 is set up on the server and I’m connecting locally. The service is running and I’ve turned off my firewall, ran updates, and tried a few other things but this error keeps coming up and has been constant since yesterday. Any ideas?

Has you successfully connected in the past? What do you see in the nessusd.messages log? Does netstat or lsof show nessusd listening on the interface and port you're trying to connect to?
