Have you checked for problems in your filesystem(s)?

How many plugins to you have in your plugins directory? Run "nessusd -s
| fgrep plugins_folder" to make sure you're looking at the same
directory nessusd is.

Can you determine from the logs some plugins that are not being loaded
and see whether you can view those manually as root?

Is there anything else controlling
what plugins are loaded or a way I can debug this?

anything to do with it? 

nessusd is having trouble loading the plugins, right? Then the client
has nothing to do with it.
