I have installed the Nessus 3. scanner on a laptop using both of these

nessusd is the Nessus server daemon; the "-D" argument tells it to run
in the background. It should, though, at least print out a copyright
notice and a progress message as it loads the plugins. Is it running and
listening for connections on port 1241? If not, check the
nessusd.messages log for errors.

The GUI is a separate program; with Nessus 3.x it's NessusClient. In
general, NessusClient must be built from source; see
<http://www.nessus.org/download/> for the download.
