How long has this been going on? Has it worked in the past? If you have
a registered or direct feed, what does "nessus-fetch --check" report?
And what do you see if you run "nessus-update-plugins -vv"?

Would it be simply easier to install Nessus 3.0 and just start over? I
would like to get the latest updates for 2.x but can't, 

That won't help -- Nessus 3.0 uses the same set of plugins as Nessus 2.2.x.
