I decided to take a look at services running and "lo and behold" Nessus 3.0 is starting at startup.
Which explains the error I was getting when attempting to manually start Nessus.
This is a change from Nessus 2.2.6 that I don't recall being stated in the Nessus 3.0 documentation. Not sure why the change to a default auto startup rather than a manual startup. I'll be re- configuring for a manual startup.
